Events

Cherry City Vegans is a newly forming group with a mission of supporting vegetarian and vegan living by providing community and resources in the mid-Willamette Valley. We are currently looking at what kinds of events and resources to provide.

If you are interested in getting involved with us, please check out our blog and events to see what is going on. We also have a Facebook page, Facebook discussion group and Google Group for communicating with each other. You can also sign up for our e-newsletter to get communications from us. Feel free to join any of these to get involved and keep posted on what is happening!

Join us Monday, March 30th!

We are having our second planning meeting and our first dine-out!

If you missed what happened at our first meeting, check out a wrap-up here. We are having our second meeting at IKE Box (299 Cottage St NE) in downtown Salem on Monday, March 30th at 5:30 pm. Please share and invite people to this event on Facebook.

Join us for our second meeting to gather ideas and make plans for our group and also to plan for our table at Earth 411, Salem’s Earth Day event.

After the meeting (~6:45 – 8:00 pm) we will have a dine-out for more informal socializing time at Venti’s on S. Commercial. If you can only come to the dine-out and not the meeting, we’d still love to have you! Venti’s has agreed to create a special vegan appetizer and/or entrees for us that night! In case you are unfamiliar with the term, a “dine-out” is just an informal get-together where people can chat and hang out and support a business with our “veg dollars.” Everyone buys their own food and drinks. Hope to see you there!

Group Communications

Our Facebook page and this newsletter are “one-way” communication tools. We recognize the need for us to be able to talk amongst ourselves to plan events and share ideas. To this end, we have created a CCV Facebook discussion group as well as a Google Group for those who prefer email or who are not on Facebook. Feel free to join the discussion!

Earth 411

Salem is having is first Earth Day celebration in 18 years, called Earth 411, on April 11th at Riverfront Park. Cherry City Vegans will have a table at the event where we can talk to people and hand out information about the environmental (and other) benefits of adopting a vegan diet along with raising awareness about our group. We need people to help plan this outreach and sign up for a tabling shift.

If you are interested, come to the meeting on March 30th or send us an email. Because this is our first tabling event, there is a bit more work to prepare than other events in the future when we will already have all of the materials, etc. It should be a lot of fun and a great way to network with fellow veg friends and outreach to the community at large.

Great American Meatout!

Friday, March 20th is the Great American Meatout!  A program started 30 years ago by Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM), it’s a day dedicated to bring awareness about the benefits of being vegan. The website has some great resources which you can share.  We requested printed materials which have been distributed and are on display at Lifesource Natural Foods, Natural Grocers and Willamette University.

Invite your friends to take the Meatout pledge where they’ll receive interactive info and exciting support resources for going vegan on March 20th (…and hopefully beyond!).

Potlucks

As of right now, we are not planning any further potlucks. If someone wants to step up and take on continuing these, we are totally in support of that! We just don’t have anyone who is heading these up at the moment. Let us know if you’d like to see these continue and you are wanting to come up with the dates and locations, etc.

Feb 022015

Just a reminder that there is no potluck this month as our normal second Saturday of the month coincides with Valentine’s Day.
Now that the website is done, we thought it would be a good time to get together with folks and brainstorm what they want this group to be!  What do vegans and vegetarians want to see as resources, events, or outings in the Willamette Valley? What changes would you like to see in Salem and other surrounding towns?  What should or shouldn’t the potluck be going forward?  We need to hear from YOU so we can make this a group we all really want to be a part of.

Join us later this month for a casual gathering to meet in person, exchange ideas, and help create our future.  We really hope to see you there! All are welcome!

Dear Friends,

The Jan. 10 potluck can still be held if someone is willing to open up the door and arrange the tables/chairs.  If you’d be interested in doing that, please let me know at info@cherrycityvegans.com ASAP.  Otherwise, we will let you know if this Saturday’s potluck has been cancelled.

Looking ahead to next month, the second Saturday of the month (our normal gathering time) coincides with Valentine’s Day.  We’ve decided to cancel February’s get together as many folks will have other plans that night.

As for ongoing potlucks, after a lot of reflection on and consideration, Jenn has decided to step-down as the organizer of these potluck events which she has been doing for the last year and a half since taking the reins from Don.  But, that doesn’t mean the potlucks have to stop.  This group isn’t about one person or even a small group of people.  It’s about community!

Since last Fall when we made the potluck one of the aspects of the newly formed Cherry City Vegans (CCV) group, now might be a good time to step back and think about what we want this potluck to be.  Are monthly meals still the right frequency?  Do we want to meet at a neutral location like the Lifesource Community Room or go back to folks’ homes in the winter and a park in the summer? Do we want to get together in the summer at all due to everyone’s busy schedules?  Who and how will the potlucks be organized/hosted? How should they be communicated?

Right now, Cherry City Vegans is completing website development and we are going to begin restaurant outreach, and do whatever else we all want the group to be.  And CCV can certainly continue to promote and communicate events such as these through its e-newsletter.  But in the near term, if anyone has interest in stepping up to take the potluck helm beginning with the March event, we welcome your reply again at info@cherrycityvegans.com.  Jenn is happy to talk to anyone individually who would like to discuss how this might work going forward.

We would love to talk to other people who have ideas of what CCV could be in the community, what events we can do, and how we can help promote a compassionate lifestyle in the Mid-Willamette Valley moving forward.
