Our Story

Cherry City Vegans began in 2013 as the brain-child of Dani Mouser who launched a Facebook page with the intention of connecting vegans, vegetarians and veg-curious people in the Mid-Willamette Valley of Oregon. A few months later, she was contacted by Laura Carver and Jennifer Hauge who were also looking to network with other veg*ans in Salem and build a veg-presence in Marion and Polk counties. Folding in another loosely organized local group that had been getting together monthly for several years to share in a vegan potluck, Cherry City Vegans was officially born.

In the spring of 2014, Cherry City Vegans were honored to be named grant recipients of The Pollination Project to fund the building of our website and to increase our presence in the community.

Cherry City Vegans is working to build an extensive list of resources and a community in our area. CCV extends a warm welcome to all vegans, vegetarians, veg-curious, animal advocates, and just-in-general awesome people. We’re here to help build connections and provide veg resources and support in Salem, Keizer, Silverton, Independence, Monmouth, Dallas, McMinnville, Corvallis, and all other surrounding towns in the Mid-Willamette Valley. Our goals are to increase vegan and vegetarian options at local restaurants, promote a healthy plant-based lifestyle, raise awareness about animal advocacy issues, and provide social opportunities and community for people who have shared compassionate values.

Laura Carver

I recently moved to Salem after living in Portland for 10 years. I’ve been vegan for about 14 years. Finding a dearth of vegan options at local eateries, I somehow found Dani and Jennifer and we began working together on CCV. I’m passionate about many causes and I work to put together Youth Empowered Action Camp, a summer camp for teen activists that serves all-vegan food. I’m also a climate change activist with Citizens Climate Lobby. I am raising two veg kids with my husband in Salem, OR.

Head ShotJennifer Hauge

I’ve been on a plant-based journey since 1999, going vegan in 2011. I strive every day to manifest my values of compassion and wellness in the way I eat and live. It’s a process of continual self-awareness that is extremely gratifying on so many levels. Nothing gives me greater joy and purpose than to speak for those who don’t have a voice in whatever ways I can. I’m a professional communicator by trade and animals are my passion. I happily share my life in Salem with my husband and two shelter dogs and volunteer as much as I can at a local farm sanctuary.
